Work Life Balance Tip #5 - Envision What's Possible

We will never know what lies around the corner, but without a map how will we know where we are going?

Creating a vision for what we want in our life or work is a very powerful process. Visions allow us to form the terrain we want to live, work and play in, as well as providing us with markers to gauge how we are going on our journey.

Ask yourself, "If I had unlimited resources and knew that I would succeed, I would ....."?

What would you do? Quit your job and open a new business, take the trip you've always wanted, work from your favorite location 6 months of the year, move to the Caribbean?

These things are all possible - in fact, I've done or do these all...and by having a clear vision on what I see as possible for my life, it has happened.

Here's a short exercise: Set aside 15 minutes today, a time when you can be quiet and uninterrupted. If you have a journal you may want to use this, if you don't get out some new paper.

Ask yourself, what do I want my life to look like 20 years from now? 10 years from now? 5 years? 1 year? Six months from now? What would I be doing if I knew that I could succeed.

Write or draw whatever comes to mind. You may find that it's easier to write/draw about what you envision your life to be like 20 years from now, while others may prefer the shorter timeframe.

Throughout the Your Balanced Life! programs, I spend a lot of time supporting individuals to create a clear vision on what's possible in their life. Maybe it is a promotion, a new home, a new car. Time and time again, I am excited and amazed at how these big and bold visions do come true.

Are you ready to create yours?

Jennifer

Balance in the age of Technology

A posts ago I wrote about balance in this age of email, cell phones and other technological advances -- Balance Tip #1 - UNWIRE.

Holly Schwindeman, of Holly's Blog, has a great post on tips for acquring balance in this age of technnology. We can't always unwire --- many times it is about creating new ways of managing our technology. Holly shares three strategies - prioritizing, preparing and living. I hope that you'll visit her post: Simple Balance and Technology Resources II, and start utilizing these tips. They're great!

Work-Life Balance Tip #4 - Declutter

Work Life Balance Tip #4 - Declutter
Copyright 2006 - Jennifer Britton

Take a look around you. What do you see? Are you surrounded by clutter or does your environment look exactly how you would like it to be?

There is a lot of writing out there about how the state of your surroundings reflect your mind, and how your environment contributes to energy flow or energy blockage (Feng Shui).

If during your survey of your environment (particularly of your home or office) you are not satisfied with your surroundings, what changes would you like to see made? What is the one area that really gets under your skin?

While many want to attack the clutter as a one time deal, this often leads to procrastination. The task just seems too large. Taking a look at the one priority area you have identified, schedule 15 minute "blitz" sessions for three or four times this week. Arm yourself with your recycling bin, and a couple of extra boxes. During your fifteen minute intervals touch everything only once and decide if the item is something to keep, throw away or recycle (sell).

If it's papers that you are looking at, break the categories down to take action on (and only keep those you really will take action on!), file or throw away/recycle. The key here is to force yourself to make a decision, rather than shuffling the papers around. Do your filing and putting away, along with making a list of action items (and a time commitment slotted). Remember, touch each piece only once!

I have a number of clients who have used this approach, and while it may not be the fastest, it helps get over the procrastination hurdle. So are you ready to start your first 15 minutes? I'd love to hear how it goes, and what comes in with the new space you have created. Email me...I'd love to hear from you!

Work Life Balance Tip #3- Identify What's Important

Work Life Balance Tip #3 - Identify What's Important
Jennifer Britton - Potentials Realized

My third balance tip is to identify what's important in your life. Is it family? Is it learning? Is it success? Spend five minutes writing down what are the most important five things in your life. Are you able to provide as much attention to these things as you would like? What will you do differently in the next week to honor these things which are important for you?

As family is one of my priorities and as my parents are such as support for my own family, I loved this blog posting on Grandfathers from Earl over at Red's Review.

Creativity and Success in business is another area that is important to me. I can see this reflected in Lynn's site -- Adornments by Lynn - where she showcases her fanastic jewelery creations. I love her creations!

So what are your priorities? Have you made enough time for them this week?

Until later, have a balanced week,

Jennifer

Work-Life Balance Tip #2 - Recharge Your Batteries

Work Life Balance Tip #2 - Recharge Your Batteries

How often do you recharge your batteries? If you had to rate your battery power at the moment, where would you put it?

Just as our car needs a regular tune up and battery charge, it's just as important for us to take time to recharge our batteries.

Burnout rates are continuing at a steady pace across the world for many executives and professionals in the work force. Many notable authors, including Stephen Covey advocate taking time to recharge and rejuvinate our body, mind and spirit. Covey calls this Sharpening the Saw. Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz also credit downtime or recovery as part of full engagement and peak performance.

What recharges your batteries? What rejuvinates your body, mind and spirit? When did you last take time to replenish yourself?

My challenge for today to readers is to take time thinking about what are the things that will recharge your batteries. More importantly, I hope that you will create some time to recharge this week. Recharging can be as simple as reading a good book, getting to the gym for that class you have not made in a while, or enjoying nature during a walk.

I'd love to hear how you recharged this week, and what a difference it's made to your outlook.
