Work Life Balance Tip #8 - What does Balance Look Like?

Work Life Balance Tip #8 - What Does Balance Look Like?

What "balance" looks like is different for every individual. I often use a tool called the Wheel of Life with clients to provide them with a snapshot of their level of satisfaction in different areas of their life (finances, health, family, career etc). Many times the wheel make look a little skewed. Prehaps at that moment, a younger professional is spending more time on career, and a new mom on family issues. Just because each area of your life is not receiving the same amount of attention it does not mean that your life is out of balance.

What does balance look like for you in the different areas of your life? What are your current priorities? What areas are you satisfied with? Which areas might be a little out of balance -- you are not spending enough time with, or perhaps may be spending too much time on?

Take some time asking yourself, what does balance look like to me in my life? Draw it, write about it, picture it.

Have a balanced week,
Jennifer

Work-Life Balance Tip #7 - Appreciation

Work-Life Balance Tip #7 - Appreciation
Copyright 2006 - Jennifer Britton / Potentials Realized

When was the last time you slowed down to savour the moment? To really appreciate the here and now?

When was the last time you told someone that you appreciate them? One of the most important values employees hold is wanting to feel "appreciated" and recognized for a job well done. Are you surprized that this is ahead of higher wages?

For many of you who are based in the US, Thanksgiving is just about a week away. Thanksgiving is often seen as a time to give thanks and appreciation to those around you.

Who do you want to thank? How can you build some time for appreciation into your holiday season?

Here's an exercise to try: Spend some time writing down 10 things from this year that you want to acknowledge your appreciation for - maybe it is related to a new promotion at work, someone who helps out with the kids, or a friend who is always there. As we move into the holiday season ,every week focus on one or two appreciation items. Make sure you share your thoughts with those individuals, or take time to appreciate what has shown up in your life (a new home, a new car).

What can you do to show your appreciation for today?

Work-Life Balance Tip # 6- Feed Your Soul

Work-Life Balance Tip #6 - Feed Your Soul
Photo compliments of GeekPhilosopher.com

I am back after ten days spent at two fantastic conferences -- one which I attended as a delegate, and one which I presented at. The energy and focus I have returned with reminds me of how important it is to "feed your soul" with those things that matter in your life. As a life long learner, conferences give me that buzz, as does travel. As a former manager who spent sometimes upwards of 150 nights on the road (and sky) a year, spending a few nights in a hotel room again reminded me of the better part of travel.

When was the last time you fed your soul, doing something different and meaningful to you?

What does feed your soul? Is it reading a good book? Hiking in nature? Travelling? Learning? Spending quality time with your family. Think about what really recharges you. Set aside some time this week to feed your soul on a regular basis, even if it is only for 15 minutes at a time.
