How Renewed at Work are You?

Several times a week I speak with professionals who are looking for more renewal at work - they want to be more productive, creative, playful and create stronger relationships with their co-workers, supervisors and subordinates.

If you are looking for the same, there is no quick fix. However, there is a wonderful book you may wish to check out called " Running on Plenty at Work: Renewal Strategies for Individuals" from Krista Kurth, PhD and Suzanne Adele Schmidt, PhD (ISBN 0-9716994-0-2).

Full of tips, information and resources, this book will get you back in the driver's seat to running on plenty at work!

Values - Our Internal Compass

Values can serve as an internal compass - guiding us throughout our lives, shaping our decisions, and alerting us as to when we get off course.

Values are who and what we are all about. Our choices are often deeply rooted in our values - the foundation of who we are. When we live our lives aligned with our values a feeling of harmony or "rightness" may exist. When we live our lives out of alignment with our values, feelings of discontent or conflict may arise.

What are the values that you hold? What are the times in your life when you know you lived according to your values? What was that like? What was it like when you moved away from them?

Take a moment and think of the top five values you hold close. You don't need to struggle to pinpoint one word for each value - perhaps they come to you as combinations, colours or sounds. Some examples of values include: fun, independence, diversity, freedom. Values are something intangible - we can't hold them. Each one of us will hold different values, even if we call them the same. My value of diversity may look very different than yours.

Spend some time over the next few days refining your list of 5 or 6 values that are most important to you. How do you honor these? What happens when they get stepped on?

What do you need to declutter?

Last week I was teaching an introductory orientation course for post-secondary students. We spent a lot of time talking about time management in the context of returning to school as a mature student and also as someone who is changing careers. One common theme that came out of the discussions was the need to DECLUTTER!

What do you need to declutter? What's getting in your way? Is it putting away those 2005 receipts and financial information (for tax time)? Is it going through those summer clothes that really won't make it to this year? Is it clearing through the papers on your desk that never seem to make it out of the filing tray?

One of the top tens tips I share for enhancing balance in your life when I undertake speaking engagements about work-life balance is to declutter. This morning I practiced what I preach, and spent half an hour sorting out my 2006 financial receipts, and getting things in order for the new year. It left me with a clear mind on the financial side.

I always say, spending some time to clear things away will open up space for new things to come in. And guess what? As soon as those financial receipts were away, two companies called me this morning with some new corporate seminars to run. It really works!

So what do you need to declutter today?
